ASEAN Snapshot: E-commerce and Social Media Market in Indonesia

Indonesia, the largest economy in Southeast Asia, is experiencing a digital revolution that is transforming its e-commerce and social media landscape. With a population of over 270 million people, of which over 200 million are active internet users, Indonesia is the World’s 5th biggest source of social media users.  Digital economy giants such as Gojek (e-hailing) and Tokopedia (e-commerce) helped propel Indonesia into the digital age in the past decade, spurring a frenzy of dynamic players to enter the market and revolutionize the archipelago’s economy and consumer spending habits.

The E-commerce Boom

Indonesia’s e-commerce sector is blossoming, driven by several factors including widespread smartphone adoption, improved internet infrastructure, and changing consumer behaviors. Indonesia’s e-commerce market is expected to reach USD 104 billion by 2025, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 23% from 2020 (The Low Down).

Key Players:

  • Tokopedia: A leading local player, Tokopedia has merged with Gojek to form GoTo Group, creating a formidable force in the market. With a GMV of USD 15.6 billion in 2023, Tokopedia offers a wide range of products and services, focusing on empowering micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) (Katadata)
  • Shopee: As part of Sea Group, Shopee is the largest e-commerce platform in Indonesia, known for its user-friendly mobile app, competitive pricing, and extensive product range. Shopee’s GMV in Indonesia was USD 14.2 billion in 2021​ (Tech in Asia)​.
  • Lazada: Backed by Alibaba Group, Lazada leverages advanced logistics and technological infrastructure to serve Indonesian consumers, achieving a GMV of USD 4.5 billion in 2021​ (Tech in Asia)​.
  • Bukalapak: Focused on MSMEs, Bukalapak is another key player in the Indonesian market, with a GMV of USD 3 billion in 2021​ (Katadata)​.

Emerging Trends:

  • Mobile Commerce (M-commerce): With over 80% of internet users accessing the web via smartphones, mobile commerce is a critical growth driver. E-commerce platforms are increasingly optimizing their mobile interfaces to enhance user experience and drive sales.
  • Social Commerce: Integrating e-commerce with social media, social commerce is gaining traction. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok are being used for direct selling, leveraging influencers to promote products.
  • Digital Payments: The rise of digital wallets such as GoPay, OVO, and ShopeePay is facilitating seamless transactions, enhancing consumer trust and convenience in online shopping.

The Social Media Landscape

Indonesia is one of the world’s largest social media markets, with over 160 million active users as of 2021. The average Indonesian spends approximately 3 hours per day on social media, making it a crucial channel for businesses to reach and engage with consumers​ (The Low Down)​.

  • Facebook: With a large user base, Facebook remains a dominant social media platform in Indonesia. Businesses use it for targeted advertising, community building, and customer engagement.

  • User-Generated Content (UGC): Encouraging consumers to create and share content related to brands is a powerful strategy. UGC helps build community, enhance brand credibility, and generate organic reach.
